WEBMAIL FAQ'S
Webmail for Standard and Advanced mailboxes does not have a sent mail folder. This is a limitation of POP3 mailboxes in general - they are designed to let users download mail to their own computer and organise it there, rather than have folders in their mailbox.
If you need to refer back to sent mail from a web mail type of application, you should upgrade to an Exchange mailbox which provides this functionality in Outlook Web Access.
What is the limit on a mailbox size?
Limits for various mailbox types:
· Standard POP3 mailboxes are limited to 20 MB, or 500 emails.
· Advanced mailboxes are limited to 100 MB, or 5000 emails.
· Exchange mailboxes are limited to 1 GB (100 MB if created before 05.01.2006), unlimited messages.
Note: Users can purchase additional mailbox space but this will not increase the number of emails that the mailbox can store, only the total size of those emails.
When a mailbox reaches either of these limits, all further email to the mailbox bounces back to the sender as "undeliverable". This can be changed in the Undeliverable mail handling options of your mailbox.
Sending and receiving file attachments
There is a 5 MB limit on the size of file attachments that can be received by a mailbox hosted by Fasthosts. Any email with an attachment exceeding this 5 MB limit will be returned to the sender as undeliverable.
File attachments in outgoing mail - that is routed through Fasthosts SMTP servers - are also restricted to a 20 MB limit. This typically applies to Fasthosts customers using WebMail, Fasthosts Dial or Fasthosts Broadband services; and customers with Advanced mailboxes, using Roaming STMP.
Customers using the STMP servers of other service providers will be restricted by the usage terms and conditions of those service providers.
What is roaming SMTP?
This article describes roaming smtp
Roaming SMTP is an SMTP service that can be used to send email from any location, through any internet connection.
This would typically be used by Fasthost customers to connect to their Advanced or Exchange mailboxes, from portable notebooks and mobile devices, like Smartphoness and PDA's.
The service works in the same manner as authenticated STMP, using your mailbox account details to authenticate the email you wish to send.
What are the differences between Standard and Advanced mailboxes?
Standard and Advanced mailboxes are both POP3 mailboxes.
Advanced mailboxes include virus scanning and spam filtering, and can be accessed by roaming (authenticated) SMTP.
Advanced mailboxes also feature 100 MB space or 1000 emails, whereas Standard mailboxes are limited to 20 MB or 500 messages.
Additional storage space can be added to Advanced mailboxes, but not to Standard mailboxes.
Advanced mailboxes also feature separate standalone mailbox control panels (MCPs), enabling end-users to self-manage their own mailboxes.
Both Standard and Advanced mailboxes can be accessed using any web browser using Fasthosts' web mail interface.
Mailbox types available
You can add any of four different types of email address to your Fasthosts account.
Mail forwarder: automatically forwards email directly to any other email address that you specify.
Example: You could set new.business@yourdomain.co.uk to forward to sales@yourdomain.co.uk.
Standard mailbox: a POP3 mailbox that is compatible with email software such as Outlook Express, Thunderbird and Mac OS X Mail, offering 20 MB of storage space and web mail access.
Advanced mailbox: ideal for most people's needs, the Advanced mailbox takes the Standard mailbox's features and adds:
· virus and spam protection
· roaming SMTP - easily send email wherever you are using our authenticated SMTP servers
· 100 MB storage space
Exchange mailbox: business-grade email with optional mobile push email. Features include:
· shared contacts, calendaring, tasks and public folders
· free Outlook 2003 licence
· Outlook Web Access web mail
· ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access
· GoodLink for email pushed directly to your Pocket PC, Windows Mobile or Palm device
· POP3 and IMAP support
· 1 GB storage space (100 MB if created before 4.01.06)
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 limits mailboxes to a maximum size of 2 GB
Limits on size of email attachments
Summary
This article specifies the limits on the size of an email attachment and explains why you might not be able to send an attachment.
Description
Email attachments sent through Fasthosts SMTP server are limited to a total of 20MB, for any single email. Any email with attachments in excess of this limit, will be rejected.
Customers needing to send attachments larger than this, are advised to compress large files to within this limit; or to split the attachment into several part and to send each part in a separate email.
Note: This limit applies to the total size of all attachments. For example, two files of 10MB each will be within the limit, while an email with files of 10MB and 11MB (totalling 21MB) will be rejected.
